Diversity has evolved from being the correct thing to do to becoming the essential thing to do. It is not an option. A diverse workforce is stronger because it helps us to be more understanding of society in general and of the customer in particular. Diversity is a competitive advantage. To maintain a global leadership position, companies must have a culture that welcomes everyone.
For most all large companies today, and for many small ones as well, the neighborhood where they sell is the entire world, so it is essential that their workforces look and think like the world, in all of its ethnic, racial, and behavioral variety. Wise companies understand that in recruiting applicants, which because of demographics will increasingly mean non-traditional talent, they are competing not just with others in their industry but with everyone. Plainly, the way to attract and retain talent, whether mainstream or minority, is to demonstrate that the way to the top is open.
In the competition to attract the best talent in the increasingly diverse workforce, the winners are likely to be companies that are already adapting to employees complex needs and expectations.
